Qualitative Case Study Research on Experiences of Participation in Art Therapy by Unmarried Mother

Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine what kind of experiences that unmarried mother have in the process of participating in art therapy and what the meaning of those experiences is. To this end, research participants were recruited through Institution A, an organization that helps unmarried mother become independent. The art therapy session was a total of 22 sessions, and was conducted in a semi-structured manner according to the psychological changes of the participants. The data collection was done through recordings and spoken words for each session, observation diaries, in-depth interview data, and works of art, and repeated comparative analysis was applied to explore the experiences and meanings of art therapy for self-exploration of unmarried mother raising children. As a result, the experience of single parenting resulted in a total of five top categories and 15 lower categories with "ego that has collapsed into a heavy life," "isolation of relationships," "facing my past through art work," "lost meaning of life," and "precious child, precious life." In this study, unmarried mother were able to find psychological stability through art therapy experience, and explored and accepted their past and present. Through this process, they accepted the life they chose responsibly and found the meaning of life. The participants also had a positive view of the future, hoping for it. Through this study, it is meaningful that it was provided as basic data for understanding the lives of unmarried mother raising children and for developing art therapy for them.
